Another Ordination

Another colleague was ordained over the weekend. This colleague I only know through the blogosphere, but he's a colleague nonetheless. Chris T. from Even the Devils Believe was ordained into the Independent Catholic priesthood. Just by viewing the photos, I learned so much about what goes into their ordination service (AND how much freedom they must have).

I've never heard of the Independent Catholicism. What is that? What makes it different?

I don't know much, but I know that one of the main differences between Independent Catholics and Roman Catholics is ICs don't recognize the authority of the Pope. Beyond that, I couldn't tell you much.

Thanks for the congratulations. :-)

To answer Monica's question, Independent Catholicism started as part of the Old Catholics, the church in Utrecht that left the Romans over the election of bishops. (The Romans wanted to start appointing a bishop for that diocese, they were used to choosing themselves.)

So yeah, the independence from Rome and some pretty wide doctrinal and liturgical freedom are a big part of what makes us different. :-)

There are some indies who really put a lot of stock in apostolic succession, but my bishop is more open-minded than that. So we were able to bring together folks from several denominations for worship -- my favorite kind of ecumenism. :-)
