A Prayer for the Never-Ending Race

based on 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18

Faithful God, it feels like we’ve been running for a very long time. We are tired. We need to rest. We so badly want to slow down, or take a break, or just stop for a while. But if we do, we worry about what will happen to all the people and situations counting on us to keep running. The race stretches beyond our sight, and we are aware that we are not just running for ourselves. Even so, if there was a way to hand the baton to someone else for a while, we would feel so much relief and gratitude.

We need a reminder from you that we are not racing alone. You are on the track alongside us as our coach, our cheerleader, our partner, our water carrier. The race continues, and you keep us going for others and for our own sakes, with the promise of rest also before us. And in our remembering, we keep the faith, trusting in your presence and renewal when our legs are at their weariest and our hearts burn during the toughest miles.

O God, we will be running for a while yet. That you run with us is a relief of its own. Amen.
